Our Maundy Thursday Worship service is often described as one of the most meaningful and powerful services of the year. It is a service of contemplation as we go with Jesus to the Upper Room for the Last Supper with those he loved. This somber service contains powerful elements of Word and of Music. Following Communion, during which the organ plays, there are seven minutes of silence. During this time, the church is stripped - banners are taken down, flowers and candles removed, and then, finally, the cross that hangs at the front of the church is veiled with a black cloth. The service concludes with 14 readings from Luke 22:24-23:56. After the last reading, those attending the service depart in silence. "The women who had come with him from Galilee followed, and they saw the tomb and how his body was laid. Then they returned, and prepared spices and ointments. "On the sabbath they rested according to the commandment." -- Luke 23:55-56 |
